Back pain is one of the most common complaints we hear at Yoga Library — and it's personal for us too. Our co-founder Anand Goyal dealt with chronic back pain for years from long hours at a desk job, and it was a dedicated yoga therapy practice that helped him find real, lasting relief. It's a big part of why we believe so strongly in this work.
How Yoga Therapy Can Help
Much of the back pain we see today comes from a combination of weak core muscles, poor posture, and long hours sitting still. Yoga therapy addresses all three: it gently strengthens the muscles that support the spine, improves posture and body awareness, and releases the tension that builds up from staying in one position too long. Because it works with the whole body — not just the sore spot — the results tend to be more lasting than a quick fix.
Practices That May Help
- Marjaryasana-Bitilasana (Cat-Cow) — gently mobilises the spine and relieves stiffness.
- Balasana (Child's Pose) — a gentle, restful stretch for the lower back.
- Gentle spinal twists — release tension held along the spine (avoid deep twists during acute pain).
- Modified Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) — builds strength in the muscles that support the lower back.
- Core-strengthening practices — a strong, stable core takes pressure off the spine over time.
A Note of Caution
If your back pain is severe, sudden, or comes with numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs, please see a doctor before starting any new practice. For everyday tension and discomfort from posture or desk work, a gentle, guided yoga therapy practice — built around your specific pattern of pain — tends to work far better than a generic routine.
